First time drawing Carl the Collector!
I've just finished watching the first 14 episodes of the newest PBS Kids show, Carl the Collector, a show about an autistic raccoon named Carl who collects things. It was created by Zachariah OHora and was produced by Fuzzytown Productions in co-production with Spiffy Pictures, while the animation was done by Yowza! in Canada. I gotta say, I think I'm starting to like this show more often since I realized that I also have autism like Carl. Not only that, but I'm shocked that Carl was actually voiced by an autistic child actor. Isn't that crazy? At least I'm glad to see Carl the Collector part of the PBS Kids lineup!

I just watched the new PBS Kids show and OMG…
I watched Carl The Collector yesterday and it was absolutely a masterpiece!
So the show follows Carl an autistic raccoon, who collects things and has friends like Sheldon, Lotta (who is also autistic, TWO autistic characters), Nico and Arugula, and Forrest, who I am headcanoning with ADHD because she is so hyper and impulsive.
So my thoughts?
I was absolutely impressed. I am autistic with ADHD, and this show was absolutely amazing. The fact they had not one, but TWO autistic characters? PBS Kids did it again! The friends are all super lovable characters. I really relate to Carl because I have a lot of anxiety, and I do collect a LOT of things. In The Sticker Collection episode, he had his sticker collection in a notebook in the dresser next to his bed, just like mine. And Lotta I relate to because I hate loud noises and I love music. Every little detail was thought out, like when Carl and Lotta stim when nervous (Carl flapping, wiggling fingers, scratching arms, Lotta twirling tail) Sheldon is a super supportive friend and reminds me of my sister.
Overall, definitely worth the wait!
100/10!

Carl the Collector has premiered!
"CARL THE COLLECTOR follows the everyday adventures of Carl, a warm-hearted autistic raccoon who enjoys collecting things and loves his friends and family in Fuzzytown. Carl pays extraordinarily close attention to detail and comes up with unique ideas that others might not consider. These traits have helped him amass his extensive collections—from autographs and bottle caps to fake mustaches, pet rocks, sweaters, and virtually everything in between—which can come in handy for solving problems around the neighborhood with his friends."
I designed various locations such as the tree fort, and Carl's living room and kitchen. I'm also the layout supervisor for the production. You can watch the episodes on the PBS Kids website, or if you have a tv channel that has PBS Kids.

COMMON PBS KIDS W!!
Carl the Collector, their new series about a raccoon boy who like to collect things, stars an autistic boy in the lead roll. Alongside that, he also has a fox friend on the spectrum.
Carl's voice actor is also autistic and there are autistic people present every step of the production process.
This is such a win for disability representation in children's programming. Honestly, I'm not surprised. PBS KIDS has always been a strong ally to our community and even the autism episodes from a while ago like in Arthur still hold up pretty well. Their commitment to kindness and respect does not go unnoticed!!
(Long Side Note: This relates to my fear surrounding my fear of Project 2025, a multi year plan created by The Heritage Project of the American GOP/right wing party. This plan is facist in nature (I recommend doing your own research, I am not saying this lightly) and one of its plans would be the abolishment of The Department of Education (Section 3, Part 11, page 319) You know the ones that help fund PBS Kids? This is rationalized by fear of the "inappropriate political indoctrination of our children" with an emphasis on “traditional families” and “rejecting gender ideology and critical race theory”. Critical race theory is the societal discussion of race and ethnicity btw. Same with "gender ideology". I usually don’t get political on my blog because it is supposed to be my happy place. So much shit is happening internationally and nationally right now that I want a place where I can just rant about stuff that's less serious, you know? But I feel like I need to bring this up when talking about PBS.
The United States is a multicultural country. Seeing a diverse group of kids on TV isn't indoctrination and people existing in a way different from you isn't a personal attack. It's just how people exist. Families speak multiple languages. Kids can be raised by a single parent, a mom and dad, or two moms/dads. People are different from each other; they have different physical features, wear different clothes, have different voices, and navigate their lives in different ways. And that is what makes humanity so vast and special. Kids deserve to see people who look like them, act like them, and have backgrounds like them on screen. And people who don’t represent them as well. I don’t like to “stan” companies or organizations. However, PBS Kids is putting in the work to bring comfort and education to children all over the country and I think that's pretty awesome. You can tell by watching these shows the care that was put in and I really hope that PBS Kids is still around by the time I graduate college. I would love to work there. PBS Kids brought me so much joy as a kid, growing up with shows like Super Why, Sid the Science Kid, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Dinosaur Train, and of course, Sesame Street. I hope children today are having that same experience with these shows <3)

Did you know that PBS Kids very recently released a show called Carl the Collector with an autistic protagonist voiced by an autistic child with neurodivergent people on the development team? And he has another friend who's autistic! A girl! Also voiced by an autistic child!
I'm not exaggerating when I say Carl is genuinely the best thing I've seen from PBS Kids in YEARS. It showcases autistic traits and coping skills in such an empathetic way. I'm extremely hyped for the show's future. Please check it out if you're on the autistic spectrum or want to understand autism better!

Writers for PBS Kids shows, including Carl the Collector, are going on strike if management does not agree to a fair deal before their current contract expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on November 21, 2024.
If this happens, this would mean production on Carl would be halted, and we would get no new episodes for a while.

Anybody else watching Carl the Collector?
He’s a lil autistic raccoon with lots of collections and things.
Also he has a friend called Lotta and she’s a fox and also autistic and she wears headphones for loud noises.
Today she mentioned that she was annoyed that people call her headphone girl and not her name. She picked out a lot of things to better represent herself and mentioned to Carl that she wasn’t ready to tell everyone she was autistic yet.
Idk it was cute.

my little brother is watching a different show on PBS Kids called “Carl the Collector” and while i was in the room, the show literally teaches you how to deal with a panic attack??? it literally has the main characters doing “in for 4, hold for 2, and out for 4.”
it also seems that it teaches you how to deal with autism and adhd, etc. like damn i didn’t think PBS had good kids shows like this???
#carl the collector#pbs#pbs kids#autism#neurodivergent#adhd#panic attack#this show is also really good for adults#it helps parents to help their own kids who are neurodivergent#autism awareness#adhd awareness#spd#sensory processing disorder#as someone with all 3 i’m impressed by this kids show
